Wait - so is it true that the ideal first thing to do would be to at least unlock the phone, because it'll wipe everything on internal SD? I unlocked and rooted my NS4G, but that was so long ago that I don't even remember. From what I recall, best is to unlock at a minimum when you first get the phone b/c there won't be anything on the SD, and that you can decide then or later to root because rooting won't wipe the internal SD. Is this right?

Open the boxThing you're gonna do when you get your nexus?
Nice!!Unlock bootloader, pull and unpack boot partition, adjust a few things, make Internet crap themselves with amazingly high and unrealistic benchmark scores.
Then put it all back so it runs better

Ill be getting the unlocked version for $349 if i decide to try a 16GB device. What you are talking about, im not sure.
Open the box
Take all stickers of the N4
Power on N4
Inspect device
Login Account
If the N4 is in perfection out the box and software is running smoothing then...
Clean the device
Place Screen Protectors on front and back
Connect my Nexus 4 to Nexus 7 through bluetooth so I can recieve my text messages on my N7.
Admire my Nexus 4 for bit then place on charger and go back to my N7
I will relish in the fact I have an N4 while on my N7 excited use my phone when I leave my house.
I use case for my N4 at work and use a leather pouch everywhere else.
When i say "unlock," I'm referring to unlocking the bootloader.
Sounds pretty good, but not sure we are gonna find front and back screen protectors, back decals, or cases right away. Wouldn't we have seen some already?
What is the advantage of that?
Well, if you ever want to flash a custom ROM on your phone, then the first step is to "unlock" the bootloader so that you can thereafter "root" your phone. What I was confirming is that by "unlocking" your phone, you end up having to wipe your entire internal SD; meaning, it's best to do it initially before you fill up that entire internal SD with data, pictures, music, and other files that you would have to backup somewhere because they'd be lost by "unlocking" the bootloader. If you do it from the get-go, before you install all of those files, you won't have to worry about backing up and reinstalling all of those files later. Eventually if you root your phone, the rooting process won't wipe your internal SD, so you don't have to sweat losing anything or having to back that stuff up and then reinstalling again.
