where are messages stored on galaxy s4, android version 4.4.4 and how to access/backup them?

I've read online that for android 5 and 6 it's on /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db, however I cannot find that com.android.providers even after accessing the top root folder using es file explorer (the data folder is just empty and it costs $$$ to view hidden files/folders). Any tips on how to back them up, if an app is suggested preferably one that can back them up in their original file format.

Why not to check some professional utilities for mobile data backup such as Dr.Fone? As I know, there is a trial version for it.

You can try this app but requires Android 5 and up , your not going get lot things compatible with the Android version your on
