Why can't I select text to copy to clipboard using Chrome on Android?

On the page https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/41600994 (for example), on Chrome on a desktop machine I can easily select any text on the page, either English or Japanese and copy it to the clipboard. But on Chrome on my Android device, nothing I've tried allows me to copy any text to the clipboard unless it's in the text edit field. Very frustrating and I feel like I must be missing something fundamental...

Welcome to Android Central! Some websites don't allow copying of text on the browser website -- not sure why. It's a different mechanism on the desktop browser (i.e., using a mouse to highlight the text). It might be worth connecting a Bluetooth mouse to the phone and seeing if you can highlight text that way.

I have found a workaround for this bug. Switch your Android browser into desktop mode. Here, the copy paste menu seems to work.
