I see many manufacturers here are making android phones. Some make great phones for less. Brands like ZTE, XIAOMI and others are not exporting their phones to South Africa. I think more competition would drive prices down. We only have Samsung, HTC,Sony and LG here. Huawei is trying but they have few phones. We can do with more competition here.

It's hard to say why a company won't go into certain countries. There may be legal issues (Like high tarrifs etc.), they may view a high expense to go into a country and see little profit, among many other reasons.
Xiaomi isn't really prominent in the U.S. either.

A combination of costs, relative size of the different markets and securing carrier support affect the decision to enter certain markets. In South Africa in particular I can tell you it's the cost of importing tarrifs is particularly prohibitive. But with the smartphone market in the growth phase I'm sure more manufacturers will try capture a slice of the pie
