If the case is metallic, or has metallic threads, no.

The phone has to ba about 1/4" or less from the charger, but most cases are thinner than that, so you're okay. (I always charged through an Otterbox case, and that's pretty thick. Even adding a few sheets of paper between the case and the charger didn't matter.)

Thanks, was curious about this too.

Some of the cheap cases will block it, but most of the reputable ones don't have any metal and they work fine.

what's so special about this Pixel charger that puts it into Assistant mode?

Id like to have 2 of these chargers so I can have Assistant at my desk in the office and at home on my nightstand. $160 is too much for wireless chargers though.

I bet it's nothing more than a proprietary NFC chip that changes behavior when docked. I can change my G6's behavior when docked.

I've been able to charge wirelessly through a case on my previous Galaxy S7 and iPhone 8. I can't imagine I'll have any issues with the Pixel 3.
