old version of hboot - help

i have a htc thunderbolt an i am trying to load a new distro on to it using clockwork mod tools how ever it is not working, as far as i can tell it is because my hboot is too old. i am on 0.95 and i see people with 1.05 a lot of places. i found a "RUU" package and tried to load it. i did the whole hold down the power and vol down thing and got to the boot loader menu. i proceed to the fast boot menu at which point it started to load the package but when it got done it went through a "checking" phase and then just went back to the menu giving me no option to accept the update. why is this happening/ help me update my hboot.

Settings>About phone> Software information> Android version 2.3.4 is what it should say if your on GB

oh im sorry i missed a 2 i am on 2.2.1
