So I attempted to play music I put on the SD card today, and got a 'this file type is not supported by this handset' message. Why am I getting it? I was under the impression that all android handsets could play back AAC encoded content. Can the charge?

I haven't had problems playing back AAC files on my Charge. I've played files from the iTunes store, as well as stuff I've encoded using the Nero AAC encoder.

Are you having success with non-AAC audio playback, or is AAC the only one you've tried?

Funnily enough, as soon as I posted it it started working. Totally random.
