If talk times on 3g are less then 2g why cant phones default 2g data for talking and use the 3g for internet and what not to help save on battery. Or maybe i have no idea what im talking about ha

Hardly a fair analogy....Talking over 2g won't take longer then talking over 3g.

VZW only uses 3G for data. All voice goes through 2G.

Yeah you aren't actually using your 3G until you connect to something over data, and for it to send out it's keep alive packets.
