App Kills Battery - Not GPS

I keep my GPS off unless I need to use it, but when I ever use it for navigating or for Geocaching, the battery drains quickly. I just installed the new My Mobile Recovery (https://www.mymobilerecovery.com), but it requires the GPS to be on to locate the phone. It doesn't seem to work with just cellular "GPS". I turned on my GPS today to see how the battery life is and it didn't seem to have too much effect on the battery life.

So am I correct in stating that the applications that use the GPS are what REALLY kill the battery, not the GPS?

No. It is the GPS that's using the energy. The difference is this:

Navigation/geocaching runs the GPS continuously for minutes or hours to keep your location as accurate as possible.

Apps such as My Mobile Recovery only run the GPS for a few seconds every hour or so to update your location.
