I take full credit for what I’m about to write... Just kidding, I don’t; but I feel there is still a huge gap of instructions missing in what people need to know before they take the root leap. No offense to the mods and administrators here, and everyone has been super helpful here, but I just wanted to start a thread specifically for the noobs and scared folks out there who want to take the root jump but still haven’t yet.

Warning:

First off, I don’t consider myself a power user in the slightest sense, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have something to contribute. Admins, please edit or delete anything that I say if it’s not accurate. Admins please edit my post anyway you see fit if my links suck or not cool enough. All of the things I’m writing about have been learned through mistakes, trials and errors. Yes, I have tons of rooting horror stories. I’m also looking for additional input and help from the people here who can contribute. I’m also looking for a few like minded dads, parents, professionals who share my passion for Android.

I do take FULL responsibility of what you do to your phone. If you need my help, you can send me your bricked phone, I’ll work on it, test it out thoroughly for a couple of months or so, do all sorts of things, test and stuff and send it back to you... kidding again... the point is, these phones are very hard to brick, you will be alright.

Alright, so who should be reading this; here are some criterias:

You are a busy professional or parent who barely have time to yourself.

You have “real” obligations, where you will require your phone to earn living so you can feed your children and not miss that call from your wife’s to get milk before coming home.

You can’t be without a working phone for any length of time, PERIOD!

You have very limited time to yourself, you have little ones running around touching your phone and wanting to play Angry Birds on your phone at the wrong times, all the time.

Your spouse just doesn’t get your Android addiction, she/he barely tolerates your phone as it is.

You were in the dog house for two days when you told her your Galaxy Nexus costs almost $450 out the door on launch day.

You have obsessive compulsive tendencies where you have your phone Exactly the way you like
it, I mean every pixel is where it should be, and if it isn’t your day is ruin.

You been reading as much you can but are still too scared to take the root jump.

You sort of know what to do, but not exactly.

You used to have real hobbies when you were single; but since you’re married now, all your money goes to a mortgage, pre-school and the wife; so your only pride and joy in life is tinkering with your phone.

You have a couple of Android friends who you geek out with, but feel somewhat inferior that you haven’t rooted or flashed a rom yet. You always feel overly excited around power users, but you always played it cool and never show it.

When your wife is talking, most of the time, your are either looking at your phone; or when the wife tells you to put the thing away, you are still thinking about when the Jelly Bean OTA is gonna drop, some App you just installed or the cool things on your phone.

You read about the power-users on this board, and say to yourself; “I can’t be like them”..!

You are sick and tired of waiting for big red, and want Jelly Bean RIGHT NOW!!!

Preparation:

Like most things in life, preparation is about 60% of the work. The actual act of unlocking and rooting comprises maybe just .001% of the entire process; the other 10% of the process is just sitting around and waiting for you phone to create an image, backing up, flashing or booting. The last 30% is setting up your phone again. So the majority of the work is getting ready to take the leap of root. The more you prepare the more enjoyable and quickly you can get back to “home”

Throughout this thread, I’m going to use the analogy of moving; in say, moving from one house to another. Home is what you have now, you love your apartment, everything is in its place, you can close your eyes and know where everything is. So the whole goal of moving is to upgrade your pad to a better place, with better features and still get back to that feeling of home as quickly as possible.

First and foremost - Take screenshots of everything - you spent hours working on your phone getting it exactly the way you want it. Take a picture of it, take a picture of each home-screen, each and every folder, the app drawer, all your Android settings, all your contacts, your storage use, you can’t go overboard here. Take it and sync it to your Picassa, make a copy of it off your phone. This is your lifeline to how you phone should look and feel.

Disable 2-step verification - Dylan and attest to this, he was helping me on the phone, we just root, and I couldn’t get back into Google because I still had 2-step. Yes, I’m laughing now, but it was no joke at the time.

Write down WiFi passwords - The first factory reset I did, and I couldn’t get back in because I lost the wifi code.

Get your phone contacts off of Verizon Wireless into a file and upload it to Google - Google it, I don’t have a link, but search for it.

Back up everything, just make a copy of your entire SD card to a folder just in case.

Write down all important App - User Names and Passwords

Write down all Android Settings

Make a copy of all your ringtones and notification sounds.

For widgets such as Beautiful Widgets, make sure you have a copy of your specific skin, make a copy of that. - Yes, there is a clock that I really miss because BW doesn’t have it anymore.

Make sure you know how to set up your corporate Email again, IMAP, server name, Port Numbers.

Make sure you have All your pictures off the SD card. - Sync it to Picassa if you aren’t already.

If you haven’t up already, upload all your music to Google Music.

Have WugFresh one click root tool ready to go, drivers working properly; double, triple check; so through the steps carefully.

Install TiBu, and learn how to use it, make sure a copy is off the computer. Don’t be cheap and buy the full version. This is about the only app you need to pay for in the entire rooting process. It’ll take a full day to learn how to use it.

Read about a ROM, decide on one, download it have it ready to go, along with the proper GAaps.

Read, read, read... let others be the guinea pig for you. If you start to see a lot of problems after a certain Rom version, don’t flash it! Be safe cause you need a daily driver phone.

Find a place where you get good wireless service, peace and quiet and reliable working computer.

Before you root, make sure your phone is fully charged and you have at least a gig of memory.

READ, READ, READ... and not just skim through it, actually internalize it...

You are almost there...

Pick a Time & Place - when you feel you done most or all of the prep work. Circle a date on the calendar to root. I picked a slow day at work, but now looking back, I should have picked a Friday night, when the wife and kids are ASLEEP!

Other suggestions on location might be:

Local Library with free WiFi

Your University Computer Lab, although most lab computers won't let you install programs.

Starbucks should be a good place on your laptop.

On a plane, I can't do it, but more power to you if you can on your business trip, you need a flight with WiFi and a long 3-4 hour flight. Actually very risky here for your first time, you probably need your phone on your trips in case something happens.

Do not be distracted:

DO NOT ROOT if: you have some personal life crises going on. You can’t be sick, your dog can’t be sick, you kids, wife can’t be sick. Nothing major should be going on in your life. Like buying a house, or working late hours. Do not root if it’s that time of the month for the wife or if she is already pissed with you, or you guys are having an argument (trust me). Take care of those distractions first.

Don’t root if you’re expecting an important phone call or text. You’re married, dang it; no more late night booty calls!

You need a good 3-4 hours of straight uninterrupted time, the first time around. If you can help it, don’t root if you’re on a time crunch. Give yourself plenty of time.

Put the kid and wife to sleep, give her a massage, give her some wine, stay sober yourself and make sure you kid is fast asleep.

Give her back massage, rub her feet; while you're doing so, run the process of rooting in your head one more time in your mind.

You can tell her the truth that you’re trying to upgrade your phone or working on the phone to be vague, but DO NOT LIE! You can say it’s for work, because you do need your phone in good working order for work,

If she objects, relent don’t fight or argue over it, but tell her it’s your desire to find some time for yourself to work on your phone. Be Nice and Patient with her it will pay off, trust me.

I usually get my son if he wakes up so I have a video monitor on just in case he wakes up.

You will be tempted to root during the day, I almost did, but was glad I didn’t. The wife the kid WILL distract you. Don’t be trying to cook, do laundry, watch TV, clean the kitty litter or playing with your kid while trying to root.

Don’t be distracted, don’t be looking at porn, watching a movie, downloading a torrent or doing actual work. You need to read everything twice, make every choice carefully and make sure you are actually pressing the right options in recovery.

You don’t want your wife to wake up finding you jerking off on the computer, she will never trust you again, she will hate your phone even more and you will be spending the next week trying to make things up to her.

DO NOT PANIC:

If something goes wrong: DO NOT PANIC! To be upfront, most likely, something WILL go wrong with your rooting process.

Do not panic... breath. There is a boot loop, the screen stays on the Google Logo.. Breath, stay calm... we’ve all been there, trust me...!

Post your problem on the forums

IF ALL ELSE FAILS: you just spend the entire night trying to get your phone back up, the sun is coming up, your kid will be waking up soon, your wife will see that you didn’t come to bed. Your phone is doing something you have the vaguest notion, stuck or just won't get cell service. Time to call it quits for now and activate an old Verizon phone.

Back Up Phone:

Have an old back-up phone ready, you can call VZ 24-hours to activate your phone remotely. one of their customer service lines: 866-755-8757

Using your old phone will buy you some time to figure out what happen and how to fix it. You won't have cell service or data, but the phone will work as it does on WiFi. You can flash, back up, do anything you want in this state. Fix it, get a new sim card and reactivate your Android.

So everything is packed, everything is labeled; boxed up, and all ready to go move to a new house, a bigger house, a fancy new new floorplan. You double checked, triple checked. Let’s do it...! Let’s Root...!

Unlocking Bootloader - Sorry about this but EVERYTHING will be erased, But the good news is that, from now on, you will have a image of Home at all times to return to. Never again will you be homeless again. Your phone’s spirit will live on, trust me; but it will be gone for now.

Rooting literally takes one click and 2-seconds. Your phone reboots and you now have superuser access. The phone looks like crap, it’s an alien phone; but the hard part is over.

If the phone boots up after root, you don’t need to sign in to your Google account for you to make an urgent phone calls or texts. Remember you can check email on the computer, and check voicemail on the landline. It still makes calls, you just won’t know who is calling or texting but it will work. If you run out of time at this point, relax, your phone works for all intents and purposes as a phone, 4G, data should work, as well as the internet.

Go to the Play Store, download Rom Manager, and you're ready to boot into recovery for the first time...

Make a nanroid back up NOW, before flashing the new ROM.

Make a copy of the back up and move it to your computer.

Some more bad news; now matter how much you back-up, sync and restore from TiBu, you still have to put things back where they are in your new place. It’s up to you how much you set up, but at least get the corporate mail working and most Google Apps is a good idea. TiBu are like movers who help you restore as many apps or help you bring up as many boxes as possible; but it is still up to you to unbox, unpack and move into your new home.

At this point you can leave the phone as it is; unlocked and rooted. You don’t have Jelly Bean, but you can build your phone up to the point before you unlocked. You can keep it stock and live to flash a Rom another day. Only this time, before you flash, you will make a exact nanroid back up of your current setup, so you will always have a phone to go back to.

When people say they restore nanroid, it means you phone is EXACTLY the way it was, txt messages, emails, passwords, widgets, EVERYTHING is the way it was. Theoretically, I can take your nandroid backup image, restore it to my phone, and I’ll know all your secrets.

Next Flash the ROM of your choice.

After flashing, you are yet again greeted by an alien phone. This is your new home, your new foundation which to build your new life. Let me be the first to welcome to Jelly Bean..!

You can do another TiBu restore and this time really start unpacking...

If you started the process around 10pm, and if everything goes well, it’ll be around 2 or 3 am. It’s up to you how far you want to get in setting up your phone... if everything seems to work...

GET SOME SLEEP... sneek into bed quietly... and kiss the wife.... you did good... You know you are not gonna get lucky tonight, but if you made it this far, consider yourself lucky...

Saturday Morning

Saturday is your unboxing day; you have a whole day to put the utensils back in the right drawer. Those widgets might have restored properly but you still need to put it back in place.

This is your time to check for any thing wrong with the ROM, you have the weekend to play with it and see what works and what doesn't.

Get some strong coffee, just because you didn’t sleep; doesn’t mean your wife and kids didn’t. Resume a regular Saturday schedule, your wife would be pissed if she see how tired you are for staying up late. The little breaks you get during the day, when the kid takes a nap or when you suddenly have the urge to use the bathroom 10 times that day, you are busy, scrambling that is to setting the phone back up.

There might be some things that don’t work, devs are always fixing bugs, you need to decide there and then if you can live with it or not. You can go back to a stock image and set it up on Sunday before Monday begins.

If you don’t agree with the ROM, restore backup and spend Sunday getting the phone back to home as much as possible.

Even with a good working ROM, it will still take weeks before you feel completely at home again.

When you feel at home again, make a backup of that image and save a copy to your computer.

I made a Drop Box account just to organize my Rooting adventures, where I have Back-up images, Roms and TiBu folders for all my devices.

It’s a brand new day for rooters on their first morning with a new ROM they just flashed themselves. Felt like winning $1,000 at the roulette table for me. To be finally free of Big Red’s control and finally have full control of your robot.

Good Luck and let me know how it goes... I love to read your horror stories, your wife’s reactions, or your experience. My wife can care less about this part of my life, and I would sure love to connect with other guys who share this addiction, um.. I mean hobbie.

Be sure to use Google Now to find a nice restaurant to take your wife or find a florist and buy her some flowers! After 8 years of marriage, Google Now can read my wife's thoughts better than I can. Remember Don’t Panic, I’ll try my best to mod this thread to be best of my abilities, but I am also a busy working parent so no guarantees... pretty soon, your kids would also know how to boot into recovery like my 3-year old does, and you can walk down the street with pride and scoff even more at people carrying around fruit phones...

Thanks for reading... your AC friend...

You might want to put some more thought into this before posting.

Guides like this should really be posted by seasoned flashers or Mod/Advisors.

The warning at the top of the write up basically tells people you are new at this yourself, which will scare people into thinking this information is nowhere near accurate.

It would be like going to a class and your professor saying "I dont know much about this, but ill try and teach you."

These are peoples phones, and what you are trying to explain is technical and can have negative results if something goes wrong.

Im not trying to rain on your parade here, but i could see this guide causing more problems then it fixes. Plus all your little anecdotes seem to make this guide confusing and drawn out.

Its just my opinion, but i would stick to the articles highlighted in this write up (Must read threads) and not the write up itself.

That just about sums up my Computer Science professor last semester.

As for this guide: you can never go wrong with Wug's toolkit ;)

Thanks for the input guys... I woke up this morning, and I had double check if I really just poured out my soul last night...

Sorry... didn't realize how long my post was, how ironic, huh..? A long post for busy parents who can't read... sorry...

Here are some reasons why I did what I did:

I wish I had this guide before I rooted, I could have been more prepared.

I read everyday people asking the same questions, there are plenty of guides here but that isn't the problem, they need to "feel ready" and prepared to root, and some hand holding.

As you guys can read, the majority of my advice isn't about rooting but what to do before rooting, how to prepare and what to expect getting back to home.

I love AC, I love my Android, and of course I love my wife and kids.... ok, not in that order...

I guess I'm just looking for others who read what I wrote and just feel me...

Lastly, I'm consolidation my time online from a few other message boards of other interests in my life, to just this one. The reason why I love reading AC is that you get to know the guys and the people here on the boards.

I like to cultivate more of a sense of community, of just being real, of how to deal with life in general and how our tech and phones integrate into that...

I do have more of a purpose of what I like to do with this thread...

I like to make it my regular blog if you guys don't mind, as you can tell, I have a lot to share, if you're interested, read if not don't read...

I like to post more on G+, but I always liked sharing on message boards and blogs more... so I will camp out here.

But I got a lot to say about my Android, and God know, my wife doesn't want to hear about it... it has to come out somehow...

So... Happy Mondays all, looking forward to getting to know some of you more... and I hope some of you feel the same...

A couple more things (on a computer now, didn't feel like typing it all out on my phone in my previous post)...

While I'm not a n00b... I can relate to pretty much everything you posted. I was a noob at one time (as we ALL were), and I remember being a bit overwhelmed when I first started down the rabbit hole with my original Motorola Droid. Back then you had to root using terminal commands, and reboot in between commands. Good times.

Like you, my family comes first. I love Android, and constantly fiddling with my device is a bit of an addiction... but I love my kids first. I feed my addiction in between time with the family... or on days they aren't around. Android and beer are my two biggest distractions when not hanging with the family. I still skimboard, snowboard, skateboard, surf, kayak, ride MTB's, hike, camp, and skydive when I have time/money. Combining any of that with the kids is a bonus.

I do try to lend advice here on the forums ocassionally, but mostly just read and participate in banter. I don't have the time to follow up on advice I may give, which may be part of why I don't give it often. There are plenty people who know more than me around here anyway. Also, most of what I know is by using google, and I figure... if I can learn that way, so can everyone else :p

Anyway, I feel you man. Family first, everything else after.

Oh, and my GF isn't that fond of my enthusiasm for Android either :'( :D

Haha.. most girls I meet are shocked and surprisingly turned on when they inevitably figure out how big a geek I am ;)

@Droidintorrance... while I think the guides we provide here and you linked to should accomplish the goals you're looking for, especially with dmmarck's excellent Hitchhiker's Guide... I'll certainly never frown upon someone trying to throw info together and help out the community.. that's what we're all here for :)

Pretty much sums up my life, down to the skimboarding/wakeboarding/surfing/snowboarding/mountain biking...and I'm in Maryland too! Unfortunately a lot of this stuff has taken a back seat since my son was born 3 years ago. Android and mobile tech in general has taken up the void as a hobby, when I find time for a hobby these days. I've only been on the snowboard and mtn bike like a dozen times the last 3 years, I miss those worlds more than anything. Except my wife has actually embraced my love of Android and tech...her Fascinate is hanging tough with AOKP ICS, and she loves when I start telling her what I've been flashing! ;) And my son finally called my Nexus 7 a nexus yesterday, and not an ipad! Small victories.

@Droidintorrance - I, too, feel you and understand what you are doing here. Word.

I didn't see any mention of flashing the Jelly Bean Bootloader when switching from ICS to JB. You might want to add that to your flashing steps. If its in there and i missed it I apologize, but this is a pretty important step to make sure JB boots correctly (and quickly) every time.

This is the first I've heard of this. I installed JB about 9 days ago but never thought of this. I haven't had any trouble loading JB but your advice appears to be sound.

How would I tell which version of the boot loader I have?

Nice post..one helluva read...I'm a parent and just rooted my nexus to JB this weekend...my very first attempt and it was scary...but, so much fun...so Just Do It!

Note: add Mac method for the Android brother and sisters out here Rockin mac's link me!....with that another big thx to Android Central for giving me that info.

How would I tell which version of the boot loader I have?

Boot into the bootloader, (Turn off, Power on while holding both volume keys) You will see a little green android with the flap open.

There will be information at the bottom including bootloader version.

PrimeKJ10 = 4.0.1 ICS

PrimeKK15 = 4.0.2 ICS

PrimeKL01 = 4.0.3 ICS

PrimeLA03 = 4.0.4 ICS

PrimeLC03 = 4.1 JB

I do not have the flash-able Zip at the moment, someone else might be able to post it sooner then me.

For a flashable zip, check the Jelly Belly thread at RootzWiki.

Learn something new everyday.. didn't do that... here is the link...

FYI... I'm still running Jelly Belly 2.4, still really stable, can't find anything wrong with it... Tried flashing 5.0 and AOKP on Saturday and Sunday, but wasn't stable enough for me...

Will try again... next Friday night..

to be totally honest, you may have made rooting seem a bit more complicated than it really is, it's all about following directions precisely. i can totally relate to ya though. my wife gets tired of my tinkering with my phone(and she wont let me "fix" hers either). i have a 21 month old son and he makes it quite difficult to do anything in front of a computer unless he's sleeping. you definitely linked to great how-to's and guides. regardless, i enjoyed your thread :-)

oh yeah, tapatalk is another app that's well worth the purchase

So, this day in the life of a crackflashing dad... it's 11:00pm, and I'm just getting ready to eat dinner, but the new circuit in the basement was modded and works, kitty litter is cleaned, recycling sorted and out, trash is out, dishes are done, and clothes are in the dryer. Kids tummies are full, and they have been asleep for a bit. Had a full day of tossing them around on the bed, blowing bubbles, riding bikes, playground, and a little in house fort building... fun for them, exercise for me (I love it).

Unlocked, flashed TWRP, and rooted my older boy's Nexus 7... flashed SGT7 on it for him... he didn't want it. Backed everything up, and flashed euroskank, restored his games... he's happy.

Watched Duck Tales movie with my four year old. Talked about his upcoming birthday... somehow agreed to an electric scooter, an African Dwarf Hamster, a party at the local bouncy place, and two pints of blood. Kids.

Anyway... about to see if I want to flash anything else than the the dirty of the euroskank CM10 I just flashed. Everything seems good. This kernel seems to have a bit better signal strength than the Franco nightlies I've been flashing until now.

Good morning at 5:00am comes early.

To all of you without kids... a big middle finger..... and you don't know what you're missing. Best. Thing. Ever.

Out.
