Bluetooth audio controls not all working

I have a Motorola HT820 stereo headset. The problem I am experiencing is that while the track forward and back controls work the play pause is either reluctantly acknowledged or not at all.

if something is playing and i push and hold the play pause it will eventually (5-10 seconds delay) pause. however i cannot play anything pressing and holding the play pause does nothing.

for my previous 4 phones, droid charge, moto droid, lg chocolate, lg vx8350. the play pause works instantly and for both playing and pausing so i have no idea what is happening.

any ideas?

What app are you using?

I've noticed that Songza only pauses, but doesn't restart songs when I press the "play" button on my BT headset.

Google Play works correctly, allowing both pause and resume with the BT heaset.

I do notice the delay of a second or two when pressing pause/play.

the native music player does work with play pause but only if the app is in the foreground and it is not paused too long. if some time passes it will not play.
