    Default Verizon XLTE speed tests

Please only post speed tests on XLTE.

If you have root, you can determine which band you are on. Band 4 is XLTE. Please see this thread :

    http://forums.androidcentral.com/sho....php?p=3248448

At least on my Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 3, there isn't a way without root to see which band you are on, however, you can do speed tests at non peak times, any speed test over 72 mbps is xlte. You can use "open signal maps" from the play store to help you locate the nearest tower. It will tell you the direction of the signal.

Then use "advanced signal status" from the play store and look at the LTE rsrp signal, the lower the better, and about 55dbm is the lowest that I have seen. This is what I see at my desk at work :

Off peak outdoors(i was walking around to find optimal signal location) :

Indoors speed test at my desk at work (i work in a high rise among multiple high rises)

This is an old one from when they first turned on AWS in my area (Coastal Bay Area, CA). Upload speeds are not great but are better than they were before (~1-2Mbps).
Also interesting to note, since I bought my latest VZW phone (Switched from GNex to Moto X), my average monthly data consumption has gone up from 7-10Gb on average, to 28-30Gb on average. Woah.

Same here. Speeds are slightly better but nothing impressive for me. Really not even a difference between peak and non peak hours. I live in Bismarck, ND which is far less populated than some of the places I have seen posted, and my speeds are topping out around 25mps, hit 30mps+ a few times. Not impressed. Not sure why I am not seeing those speeds.

So if you're NOT rooted how do you know if you have it? According to the link for the cities I don't think that's where my signal comes from, I think mine comes out of Milwaukee.

Thanks for all the information. We don't live in one of the Roll Out cities, but it will get here soon enough. Some of the speeds look impressive.

Does it really matter, when everyone is using it won't the speed slow down anyway? Not sure what the benefit of volte is. Seems like voice quality will go down when data is being heavily used.

No, speed would be the same. VoLTE will have priority for LTE network.

It depends. 20x20mhz aws lte is capable of 150mbps downlink, but right now, most towers are limited to 80 mbps. When volte is deployed, they could give xlte the full capacity, and by doing so my guess is that it should not degrade data speeds. Now if they don't improve lte and push out volte then it would probably hurt lte.

So my question then is why don't they just leave voice the way it is now and use the volte as a main data and the current lte as a data backup when volte gets congested.

I think voice is fine the way it is now, data is just going to get more and more congested IMO.

Because from my understanding if voice goes to VoLTE they can convert that spectrum used for voice calls right now to more data spectrum.

Correct. At some point once volte is working well, they will eliminate cdma completely and probably refarm it to lte. Keeping cdma radios costs a bit of money, eliminating it would be a cost savings for verizon. Though I doubt that we would see the savings trickle down to us. Also, refarming existing cdma to lte would give more spectrum for lte. Also having voice and data occurring over the same spectrum allows for more effective use of the spectrum as I think calls will continue to decrease. When there are no calls, all the spectrum can be used for data. lte is also more spectrally efficient than cdma so this makes sense from a network point of view.

Chicago area using an LG G2. Can't post a Speedtest screen shot since this is a report my son texted me. He was at school and reported 84Mbps down. He did not report his "up" speed. Crazy fast given he was inside.
