Disable Android Marshmallow "Share to"

I have the nexus 5X and I love it. The issue I am having is when I go to send a photo to someone, sometimes I get the normal screen with the apps to share to (hangouts, instagram, etc..) other time I get a list of people above the apps that I can share to using messenger. The problem is:

1) I don't use messenger, so even if I click on one of the people it just tells me I have to make messenger my default app.

2) I often hit one of the "share to" people by accident because thats where the hangouts icon usually is. It is very inconsistent as to when the "share to" people show up or just the apps.

Is there anyway I can turn this feature off? I would prefer to just NOT see the "share to" people, and just see the apps.
