New google maps/navigation question

Before the latest update, I was able to turn off my screen while using navigation to save battery life. It still talked and gave turn-by-turn directions, and I could turn the screen back on whenever I needed to see. However, with this latest update, whenever I press the power button to turn off the screen, it turns right back on. Is there any way around this?
