Android app permission

Hi all
I am using an iptv app that can record.
If I use the default storage directory in my internal android box it works fine. However if I change the recording directory to an external HDD then it says permission denied and wont record.
Would anyone know how to change the app so it has permission to write to the external HDD?

I might be wrong, but I think that since Marshmallow (6.0) user-installed apps are unable to write to external storage (e.g. microSD card).
