Why does the Google Instant Play app automatically update even if you don't want to.

Because Google thinks they know better than you what you want.

In all seriousness, it's just how some things are on smartphones. I don't even have instant play apps turn on and it still auto updates on me.

You got that right. Tried to uninstall the memory-eating app, then some of my other apps won't work.

I have auto update turned off in the play store, but it updates any app it wants at any time it wants. I use a third party ago to disable the play store to stop it. When the Play Store is disabled, some paid apps won't run because they can't confirm the license. I enable it, start the app I want, switch back to the disabler, disable the play store and switch back to the paid app. It's the only way to stop unwanted updates.
