In the meantime without knowing what device you have and what ROM you'll be using to root your device there would be no way for us to say what you can expect when complete. As far as speeds that is. As far as performance you can expect faster battery drain, a warmer device and probably not much notable improvement. If the games you're wanting to play were meant for your device they would already be optimized for your device. I guess that is only if you're getting apps from the Play Store. If you're shopping around on the internet overclocking may be the least of your worries as many of the internet app stores can release harmful, even malicious apps. Just friendly information.

What phone do you have?

Have you looked at XDA Developers site? They do way more rooting and advice for overclocking that what you're likely to find here in the general Ask A Question area. Once you join there are more areas to look at including a development forum where you're likely to find more or better help.

I agree with Vidjunky , its best to ask xda otherwise you end up damaging your device if you don't know what you doing or tweaking.

...Now both this articles are suggesting different apps. Which one to choose? I don't want to see any mishaps happening with my device.

The first article is from the best Android root, ROM and modify site I know of. XDA would be where I would start.

To answer the title question: in my opinion, no, it’s not really worth doing, except perhaps for the enjoyment of meddling with things.
