phone to tablet text messaging

I have a Samsung galaxy 3 phone and my minor son has a galaxy note tablet that has a phone # for it and his father and I would like to be able to text his tablet like we text each other and for him to be able to text us if he needed to. is there a way to do that and what app would we use with out having to have an email account for him?

Welcome to Android Central! So your son's Note is the tablet sized version, but can still act as a phone? Are you in the US or elsewhere in the world? As far as I know, the Note tablets in the US don't have telephony.

If your son's Note has a phone number and is capable of making phone calls, then it should have a Messaging app. You should be able to send texts to his number.

Otherwise, you may want to consider using something like Google Hangouts to send instant messages over the web.
