Custom Notification sound not working.

I am using an Android phone version 4.1.1. I am trying to put my a custom text tone on my phone. I followed the instructions on the Android Central Article "Android 101: Adding your own custom sounds to Android events". The only thing I had to do different was connect my phone to my computer (Mac OS X version 10.6.8) via Bluetooth because my computer refused to recognize my phone when I connected via USB. When I copied my desired text sound to my phone, I go to change the settings, I find the sound I just added, I tap the sound to make sure it plays, but the sound doesn't play. I tap the added custom sound multiple times, but the sound doesn't play, and whenever I get a text message, the phone goes back to my default sound. Why is my custom notification not working? Can somebody please help me, because this is really frustrating.
