Please help - old guy first time with android. How do I stop vzwservice?

Really find this very complicated. Cannot use gmail at all on phone.

One possible fix is Settings, Apps, All, scroll to the Google+ app, touch it to open it, and select Uninstall Updates. I'm not positively recommending it, because I don't understand it nor what the other effects of uninstalling updates might be, but others have found that this works, with no apparent ill effect:

If you have already tried going to settings… accounts, and tried to set up your gmail account and failed, I would get on your computer and download the manual for your device. The manuals are available at the Verizon site under your device or from google.
If you can be more specific as to the problem you are having, all here are more than happy to help.
