Why isn't my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 able to access the internet?

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 cannot access internet

Connected to wifi but when trying to access internet, produces a message that a valid security certificate isn't available. This happens with google, gmail, basically all websites I tried. Also "unknown problem with Google Play" and Sync is currently experiencing problems" When I manually sync, says last sync was in January of 2000! This tablet is only 2 years old! When I did access e mail once it was from February of 2014. This is my mom's tablet and she has not used it for 9 months. She wanted to download a book to read. Otherwise she only used it to check e-mail and play pandora occasionally

Welcome to Android Central! Does this occur on any wi-fi network, or just the home one?
