How do I access my Downloads from a pc connected by usb?

I can find my Downloads on the Nexus 7 tablet. However, I connect the tablet to a pc using a USB cable and cannot find the Downloads folder. I get "Internal storage" and there is a Download folder (not Downloads) but it's empty. It seems that these documents can't be accessed or copied from the table to/from my pc.

Welcome to Android Central! On the tablet, swipe down the notifications and tap the USB connection notification. Make sure it's set to MTP.

On the computer, do you see any other folder besides Download? By the way, the folder /storage/sdcard0/download is in fact the folder that gets displayed in the Downloads app.
