Oh my days, how hard is it to find the answer - boarderline going back to apple as cloud 'just worked' as they say...

I have S5 and have a gmail account, all I want to do is backup my contacts on my S5 into my gmail account.

Followed loads of YouTube videos, wikitips etc yet all the options they say too select I actually don't see in the settings. When in log into gmail there isn't the contact option to even select!

Help someone, left apple as Android is more functional to my home network setup, however this is bugger the life out of me to the point I'll go back just because cloud simply worked at a click of a button..

The Apple user in my household finds icloud sync to be a disaster, but we'll save that discussion for another time and see if we can help you sort this out.

Android is admittedly confusing here. The settings you seek are not in gmail. They are in the contacts aka people app, where you can choose which contacts to show and use. This is where you tell the phone to store contacts in Google, not locally on the phone. And to make sure they are syncing, go to accounts, Google, and confirm that the sync box by contacts is checked. It pays to uncheck it then recheck it.
Sorry for your frustration. Good luck.

Contacts entered as Google accounts get synced. Contacts entered as Phone, Device (the default, stupidly) or SIM contacts don't. And that's the one thing you can't edit in a contact. So enter all your accounts as Google contacts.

If you have some that aren't, Export the contacts. Connect to Google Contacts with a browser. Press the More dropdown and Import the file you exported. Drop More down again and merge duplicates if you find any.
