I don't use Gmail, so I disabled it. I only used Samsung's native email app or Yahoo Mail when I check my mail. Was it safe that I disabled Gmail?

It should be ok. Great thing is you can reenable it if you think there is a problem.

Me, too. I use Samsung stock email app and have set POP3/SMTP for my own email account other than gmail.
    It works fine.

Mine has been disabled almost since I got my Note 3 over a year ago. I only enable it to check something in it if someone asks a question about it (like where is the box to do X) and I can't remember. Then I disable it again.

It's, IMO, about the worst email app I've ever used - and I've been using email since it was private messages on dial up bulletin boards and send and receive programs on private networks. (I wasn't at MIT in 1965, so I never had the [from what I understand very dubious] pleasure of running MAILBOX. I do remember, however, the computer!user form of email addressing used by uucp.)
