Download icon showing up erroneously on text messages

For the last couple of weeks, the text messaging icon has occasionally (2-5 times daily) been showing that there are unread messages. When I open text messaging, generally I have to scroll down a few to find the "unread" indicator. However, it's a message that has previously read and cleared, but now has only a square "DOWNLOAD" icon in the message line. There is nothing to download. To clear it, I have to tap the small stacked lines icon in the top left of screen, and tap of "Delete messages," choose the one with the erroneous DOWNLOAD icon, and delete it. Repeatedly happening to one particular person, but NOT always. A couple of times, I've texted that person and asked, did you just send me something on text message? Answer: No. Now it's coming up on a couple of other people's old text message.
ANY IDEAS????? Getting tired of deleting this.

Try Settings, Apps, All, scroll to the Messaging app, and select Clear Cache.
