I installed/activated Hangouts by mistake. Now even if I disable it, texts keep going there instead of the default Messages app. What do I need to change so texts can only go to the messages app and not to Hangouts?

If the messages app doesn't ask you to make it the default text app when you open it, install Default App Manager Lite and set it there. (It'll probably take you to Hangouts, where you can Clear Defaults. then to a "Always/Just Once" page where you can choose the default app.)

You can do the same things manually, it's just easier with the app.
