if screen is broken and phone wont power on can i still get my pictures?

everyone says if it does not power on its gone!!! I am old so i did not know how to save pics and im in trouble now!

I have been told that if there is severe damage to screen and it wont power on with charger, i lost everything! I REALLY NEED MY PICS.
