Why is the Google Maps draining the battery on my LG G3?

My LG G3 is telling me that on full charge the estimated time left on the battery is only 6 hours. The phone is only 5 months old. I charged the phone 3 times using my PS4 but other than that have always used the charger shipped with the phone. I take excellent care of the phone as well. After checking the usage on the battery I noticed that Google Maps is using 40% of my battery even when the app is closed and not in use. I used battery saving mode for my location whenever I am not using maps. This is the first time I have ever had anything that high, it's using more of the battery than my display! I'm running version 5.0.1 on the G3. What else can be done to get maps from using so much battery? Thanks for the help!
