Why is my Samsung Galaxy S6 discarding the contact I create?

I have been trying to add a friend to my contacts and the phone erases the contact 5 seconds after saving it. If I create the contact using only his email address, it is fine. The minute I try to save his mobile number to the contact, the phone bins the entire contact. It says "contact saved" and then 5 seconds later, it deletes it. Any thoughts?

Are you saving the contact to Google, or Samsung or some other service? I know that Google does not get along well with contacts with special characters in the name.
