AC Question

Hi,
I have recently upgraded to Lollipop and now my Samsung Galaxy S4's screen turns on for about 2 or 3 seconds every time a new email or message is received, or in fact any time a notification is received about anything.
When my phone's screen is turned off, I don't want it to *ever* turn on by itself.
Is this the default behavior in Lollipop, and if so, why? And how can I turn it off?
Thanks

Ian - there is no Settings > Display > Ambient Display option visible on the Samsung Galaxy S4.
Is this behavior something that should be happening in Lollipop by default?

I just thought I'd ask, as it is a feature on my Moto running Lollipop 5.0.2.
It seems that some phones can get it and others can't. See :-
