I have tried using strictly the stock "do not disturb" mode and still get notifications. I also have downloaded a third party (specifically Nights Keeper, which I love and highly reccommend). I stopped using the third party AND standard DND because of the widely known alarm not going off issue.
I have my DND settings set to allow Favorite Contacts, and allowing alarms, calls, and messages from what are considered my Favorite Contacts.
I AM STILL GETTING NOTIFICATIONS FROM EVERYONE! So I unselect alarms, calls, and messages AND disable exceptions completely. I GET NO NOTIFICATIONS. Perfect! Solved!

I try to set an alarm and then I get a message that I need to enable alarms in exceptions. I do that. I STILL GET NOTIFICATIONS WHILE MESSAGES AND CALLS ARE UNCHECKED.
