My HTC one m9 won'y charge, it says that it is charging but it continues to die. How to I fix this?

When I plug my phone in it says its charging no problem, I plugged it in at 45%, and when I came back it was charging and at 33%. This started a few days ago and it doesn't seem to happen every time I charge it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

The USB lead may have become faulty, or the USB port connector damaged or dirty. There are other possibilities, but check those first, as being perhaps more likely.
