Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Is it a Bluetooth stick or one that plugs into the headphone jack? Did you read the instructions for the stick?

In general, selfie sticks require the phone's volume button to be set as the shutter release button. If that's possible on your phone, you'll find it in the Camera settings.
