Will GPS work without a sim card?

A

AC Question

I've got a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 that I'm not using, it's running Jellybean or KitKat, I can't remember off the top of my head. I'm thinking of using it as a golf computer by installing SwingbySwing and buying a load of NFC Tags for my clubs - any golfers out there will understand when I describe it as a cut-price "Game Golf".

Anyway, will the GPS even work without a SIM card? If not, would buying a PAYG card with no data plan enable me to use GPS? Does it count towards data?

Please forgive me if these are stupid questions but I know the square root of bugger all about mobile phones.

Thanks in advance,
Mark

GPS should work without a SIM card.... it doesn't use your mobile radio to get your position... but apps that interface with GPS often do need some sort of data connection (like nav apps, etc).
