I want to root Samsung Galaxy S4 - pros & cons?

I have Canada network locked Samsung Galaxy S4 SGH-I337M running on Android 5.0.1 version and almost 15 days left to warranty. I have heard a lot about rooting the android phone and wanted to do it but wasn't sure is it a good idea or not? I am newbie and want to learn something new about this. Can anyone tell me how is this possible and it's pros and cons, where it can get wrong, is there any step by step guide available? There are so many things available that's why I am asking which one will be legit.
