Default SMS app stuck on hangouts

I've tried to switch the default SMS app back to the native Android messenger app both through the settings and through the Google hangouts app settings but all new texts are still getting routed through hangouts anyway.

Using a Nexus 6P on Project Fi if it happens to matter.

So you have went to settings > applications > default applications and either reassigned or cleared the messaging default app?

When you open Native SMS app, do you get a messaging saying it's not set as default, click here to make it default app?

Yup! Everything still gets forwarded to hangouts. Tried switching it to textra and everything.

Same problem here. Same phone, same service. Hmmmmm
