AC Question

So I am an IOS developer trying to move into android development or at least try it out. So please be patient, I am used to everything working smoothly, and am used to having ide's that automatically recognize connected devices without having to fuddle with drivers.

Anyway a friend gave me his old galaxy s3 SCH-I535 "phone" that he has since upgraded from. It has no sim card but can connect to wifi. It is currently running android 4.4.2.

I am trying to develop with it on a windows computer using netbeans and Android Studio.

Unfortunately I keep trying to connect it to the computer with no luck! It just wont recognize it. I have tried a couple strategies here on this forum like using download mode with no success.

I would update the device firmware because I fear that is the problem... but its verizon and no sim card (you would figure they wouldn't care about random people downloading their library of bloatware) so I dont think I can with traditional methods.

What should be my steps from here?
