Windows Phone User Looking to Android

I have been a long time windows phone user (Lumia 928 and HTC One M8 for Windows) on Verizon. After the latest round of Windows 10 mobile updates, neither of my phones will continue to be updated through Windows 10. As the only realistic option to stay with windows on Verizon is to "downgrade" from the One M8 to the Lumia 735, something I am reluctant to do. I do A LOT on my phone and my concern is that the 735 won't be able to keep up. I figure my only option, at this time, is to look to Android. iOS is out, we use iPhones at work and I am frankly done with them. I see there is a slew of flagship android phones available and I am overwhelmed. Specifically I would like something that I can root, with an SD card slot, with decent battery life, 5 inch screen. Basically that's it. Can anyone offer some suggestions or preferences? I throw myself on the mercy of the kind Android Community. Thank you.
