Lock screen so dim I cannot see keyboard to unlock it

When I first turn my Samsung phone, android version 4.4.2 my phone screen is very dark. I can swipe at it to reveal the brightness adjustment bar but even that bar is so dark I can barely see it. Is there a setting I should be using. I would like my lock screen to be bright when I turn phone on.

Welcome to Android Central! What happens when you adjust the brightness to max? Is it still really dim? If so, the LCD backlight may have failed. Bring it to a repair shop.
