should i use the mobile data or wifi setting to save on data usage

been using mobile data setting but seems like data usage is going thru the roof. don't know what the wifi setting is for.

Welcome to Android Central! What data usage are you looking at? Is it total data usage, or specifically for mobile data? If you are connected to a valid wi-fi hotspot (and have logged in correctly), then the phone should be preferentially using the wi-fi data connection, not the mobile data connection.
