AC Question

This is something that is so easy to do on every Iphone that my non-tech wife does it all the time. I want to assign a different notification sound to each contact. I can do that for ringtones, not notifications. I've seen some posts that say you can change the notification sound for a contact by editing the contact. Not on my phone - it gives me a place to change the ringtone for the contact, not notification. Looked under edit, under settings, I'm just not getting that option. I have a Motorola Pure running Marshmallow. I've tried 3rd party apps but each one seems buggy in a different way. Why wouldn't Android make this easy?!?! They know that it's valuable to change ringtones for different contacts, that's why that capability is built in. And everybody gets about 50 times as many texts (at least) as phone calls. This is driving me crazy. Is this at all addressed in Nougat?

My LG G4 from ATT does custom sounds per contact for both ringtones and for notifications.
This would seem to be a phone or carrier limitation.

Have a Moto Z Force running Marshmallow. Have been searching for this solution and finally stumbled on it. In a text from the contact you want to change the notification for, hit the 3 dots in the top right corner, choose people and options, pick sound and it lets you change the notification tone for that contact.

Go to Contacts, Edit, expand the dropdown menu. You will see the option for ringtone and message notifications selection on a per contact basis.

I assume you mean to select a contact before Edit am I correct?
If I select a contact then Edit I can tap the three dots and get a list that includes "Set ringtone". On my Sony phone, if I select that and pick a ringtone it uses that same ringtone for both Calls and Texts.

The current version of Android should show you a Message Ringtone option at that menu. Can't help anymore. Good luck.
I would call the carrier.

Thanks.
I am doing a lot of searching and it seems Sony only allows one "Notification" tone. Some type of tailoring on their part.

I don't think the carrier is the solution because I have an android 4.4.??? phone and it works as you describe.

I'll keep searching.

I have a Samsung Galaxy J3 that runs Lollipop. The way that works best for me without using third-party apps is to apply the ringtones for groups of contacts for better management - this in case of personalizing the ringtones for more than one contact -.

All you have to do is create the group of contacts - for example, family, friends, etc -, add the contacts to the group and then in the group edition you apply the ringtone for the group created. If you want to add the personalized ringtone to a single contact, you only enter the contact's edition and the option to add a specific ringtone for that contact must appear.

But how do I make the ringtone for text messages different then call for the same contact.

I have installed the app, SMS Sounds. It might do what I want. I am having a few glitches but I hope to work those out.
If it works I'll post back here.

Actually I tried Zedge first. I found it to be loaded with junk I didn't need. I spent a minute or two trying to figure out how to do what I want and decided I had wasted too much of my life on it and uninstalled.

I installed SMS Sound and in less then 10 seconds I was doing what I wanted.

Bare bones beats glitz every time as far as I am concerned. I always go for the bare bones.
