why does my Samsung Galaxy s5 shut down with 50% battery left?

First, you can set the shutdown point manually. Second, check the battery graph (in Settings). Tap the graph to get to the second graph. If there's a sharp drop to 0 when it shuts down, the battery has a dendrite (a common problem with lithium technology) and has to be replaced.
