What does this mean?

My dad was browsing the internet on his Sony Xperia E4G & he clicked on a link which would take him to a safe site & had a message pop up saying that his phone was affected with 4 viruses & if he doesn't download an app to sort it the virus will affect his SIM card & SD card. The only option he had was clicking on ok or exit the website. Was that message a virus or something?

It was most likely a browser hijack. If you go into settings>apps, scroll to the browser he is using, and click clear data, that should return everything to normal.
