I believe that error is something you usually see if the Play Store and Google Play Services get out of sync somehow (One got updated and not the other). When that happens, it sometimes takes care of itself on its own via automatic updates, but not always. When that happens, you have an easy way and a hard way... the hard way, unfortunately, is the way that maintains your data.
1) Disable the Play Store, which rolls it back to the factory version, and also go into and remove all its app data
2) Disable Google Play Services, clearing the app data as well
3) Re-enable both, reboot
4) Put the phone down and walk away and wait for everything to auto-update (Play Store and Google Play Services)
5) Cross your fingers that something doesn't break and you get suck in a 'XXXXX has stopped' loop
Easy Way
1) Do a full factory reset and allow the Play Store and Google Play Services to update themselves during the restore process.
