I cannot hear my phone ring when someone calls.

When someone calls I can not hear the phone ring. The persons calling say it will either not ring at all or rings 2-3 times and then goes to voicemail. If I happen to be in voicemail and someone calls I can see that someone is calling but no ring sound. Can this be fixed or do I need a new phone. Consumer Cellular says that I probably need a new phone. I have Android 5.1 and it is 1 year and 3 months old. Please review and advise

Welcome to Android Central! Do you have Do Not Disturb turned on? Are you certain your Ringtone volume is turned up (which is separate from Media and Alarm volume)? Have you turned on any caller blocking features?
