AC Question

Apparently there is a software update for my J5. It refuses to update on the basis that I need an additional 489MB storage. The update file is 851.31MB. Smart Manager says that I have 1.26GB free. Why is this not enough?

I have removed all my photos and files, and one or two apps that I don't use. I have very few apps and no music or videos on the phone. The apps that are left would not free up another 489MB. What can I do?

Welcome to the forums. A system update needs some extra room to be successful. Go to your storage settings and see how big your cached data is. You can safely clear this cached data and see if you can get enough free storage to install the update.

OK thank you for your help, it makes sense that it would need extra storage. I have done as you suggested but only freed up another 6.39MB. The message when I try to update then said "An additional 468MB of storage is required".
In desperation I have now uninstalled 5 of my apps (which I hope I will be able to re-install later). Restarted the phone and now it's downloading the update file. Will post the result later!

Hello Sue! Thanks for registering! Which J5 model do you have, 8 or 16 GB of internal memory? Are you using an SD card for your media files? Tell us how it goes.

Hello Javier. My J5 has 8GB internal memory and I have just installed a 64MB memory card (which will hold my photos etc from now on). The update worked OK, and I have reinstalled the apps. I didn't expect it to be such a nuisance, but all is well now. Thanks for your help and support.

Glad you managed to get it done. Yeah, 8GB don't give too much free storage for your apps. Use your SD card for all your media files and keep an eye on your cached data.

Just so you know, updates (and downloads) go to internal storage, not to the SD card. You can have a blank 200GB SD card and still not have enough space to update an app.
