Welcome to Android Central! That shouldn't be the case -- it may have to do with the particular apps you're using. When you're not actively using an app, it should be paused in the background, not using any battery (unless it has an active service running, like a music app that continues to play in the background after you've switched to a different app). If an app is using up battery in the background, it might be due to poor coding or a glitch.

You can close an app by going to Settings>Apps, selecting the app, and tapping Force Close. If you tap the Recent Apps button and swipe away the app, that usually acts as a close as well. But be aware that Android is designed to keep RAM mostly full of open apps, for quickness and efficiency -- it's not like how Windows works. So if you close an app, the system will automatically open another app (or perhaps that same app). Task killer apps that do this automatically can actually worsen your phone's performance and battery drain, because this process of force closing and then restarting an app uses power.
