What happens to my messages and contacts and all settings in my Verizon message+ when I install Android messages? Will it mess everything up? And will I have to do all kinds of new settings to use it

Great questions!

I'd download android messages before doing anything with messages+ and set it as your default messages app. If memory serves me correct the Verizon app cannot be completely removed only disabled. Settings > apps / application Manager > messages+ > disable

Since android messages is a new application you will need to redo settings.
