Mail deleted from server despite phone mail setup to never do this.

AC Question

Just replaced my old phone (HTC Desire S) with a CUBOT Manito. On it, I have setup my mail account as POP3 and Never delete email from the server; the same settings as on my HTC.

I prefer to use my PC for mail using Mailwasher to delete on the server those emails I'm not interested in and only download to Outlook those I am interested in.

This worked fine on my HTC. I could have a quick look at my mail that was on the server and delete them off the phone once I had read them. They were NOT deleted from the server.

However, this does not work on the Manito. Mail deleted on the phone is also deleted on the server.

Any ideas on why this is and how to stop it?

Many thanks

Check the email account settings in your phone's email app.

When using POP3, your only options are (1) download new mail and remove it from the server, and (2) download new mail and leave it on the server. POP3 does not have the ability to sync your phone actions back to the server.

It sounds like your email app is using IMAP instead of POP3. IMAP does sync your phone actions back to the server.

My BT account is definitely setup as POP as in the link.

Playing around, I noticed that there is an Email sync setting, which was ON by default. (I never knew email syncing was possible with POP accounts.) Nevertheless, switching this OFF solved the problem.

Thanks to both of you for your help.

Glad you figured it out! Maybe that "email sync" setting was that email app's version of "Delete copy on server," since "syncing" in this respect likely means that deleting an email on the phone will also delete it on the server.
