Welcome to Android Central! Electronics don't do well when exposed to water. It could be the SIM card, the SiM reader, or something on the motherboard. The first thing to try is to get a replacement SIM card from your carrier.

Even if you get a SIM card to work, the phone is eventually going to fail due to the water. For your next phone, read Oh, no! My Phone got Wet! so you'll know what to do immediately after it gets wet. (Even a water resistant phone can get water inside if it's not placed in water very carefully. It's probably safe if it's raining when you're using it, but if you splash the water when you put it on [or you drop it into water] it will most likely get wet inside. If it was waterproof, it would be guaranteed against water damage, and no smartphone that I know of is.)
